Senator John Cornyn predicted that President Trump will face the “most miserable two years” of his life after the November midterm elections, citing expected Republican losses and a diminished Senate majority, according to an interview with The New York Times published on June 11, 2026.
In his first extensive interview since losing his Texas Senate seat to Trump-endorsed Attorney General Ken Paxton in a May 26 primary runoff, Cornyn warned that the post-midterm landscape will prove particularly challenging for Trump. “I think November is going to be a disaster,” Cornyn said in the Times interview, according to The Hill. “He’s going to have the most miserable two years of his life in the last two years of his term, I think.”
Cornyn also predicted the Senate itself will face a “bumpy ride” for the remainder of Trump’s term. He argued that Trump’s demand for unwavering loyalty is damaging Republican prospects. “There’s never going to be good enough for him, other than 100 percent, you know, slavish adherence to whatever he wants,” Cornyn told the Times. “But obviously that’s not what the senator’s role is supposed to be, especially in terms of checks and balances.”
The Texas Republican said Trump’s approach will make governance harder and more expensive across the country. “It’s going to make things harder, certainly more expensive in Texas, and make it harder around the country,” Cornyn said, adding that he was not seeking “vengeance” but speaking from his assessment of political reality.
Cornyn’s comments come after his stunning primary defeat to Paxton, who secured Trump’s endorsement on May 19, just days before the runoff election. Despite spending over a year attempting to demonstrate loyalty to Trump, Cornyn fell to the Trump-backed challenger. He characterized Trump’s endorsement of Paxton as decisive, saying the president “couldn’t resist” intervening in the race.
The outgoing senator also warned that if Democrats win control of Congress in November, Trump will face a third impeachment and be unable to advance his legislative agenda. Cornyn has been vocal in recent months about his concerns regarding Trump’s influence on the 2026 elections, joining other Republicans worried about the party’s midterm prospects under the current political environment.
