The Trump administration faces mounting legal losses as federal judges strike down key policies across immigration, labor, and benefits programs. The Just Security litigation tracker is following 823 cases against the administration, hundreds of which Trump has already lost, according to reporting from Baptist News Global on June 9, 2026.
The recent defeats span multiple policy areas. A federal judge in Massachusetts struck down Trump’s $100,000 fee on H-1B visa applications on June 8, ruling the policy unlawful. Days earlier, a federal judge halted the administration’s efforts to impose conditions on SNAP benefits, which help nearly 40 million Americans afford groceries. A separate federal judge also ruled against the administration’s restrictions on asylum seekers, saying the policy was illegal and improperly fueled by “anti-immigration sentiments,” according to the Baptist News Global account.
The scale of the legal challenges is historically unprecedented. The New York Times reported that the Trump administration faces more than 750 lawsuits, with courts ruling against the administration in more than 400 cases as of June 9, 2026. Democracy Forward, a legal advocacy group, reported that by January 20, 2026, the Trump-Vance administration had faced more than 600 lawsuits and lost in court more than 70 times.
The losses cut across policy domains. Faith groups have filed numerous suits challenging the administration’s immigration policies, including actions from the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America, the Religious Society of Friends (Quakers), and the Mennonite Church, according to Baptist News Global. The Center for Biological Diversity has filed more than 260 legal challenges against the administration to block rollbacks on climate change, wildlife protection, and public lands. The American Civil Liberties Union has filed hundreds of legal actions challenging the administration’s policies on civil rights and liberties.
One significant loss came in February when the Supreme Court invalidated most of Trump’s global tariffs, ruling that only Congress can levy them. The court ordered Trump to refund $160 billion or more in tariffs paid by nearly a million U.S. companies. As of the Baptist News Global report, the government had refunded only about 12 percent of the illegal tariffs and continues resisting paying the rest.
Often, Trump’s legal defeats are not the end of cases but merely the beginning of the appeal process. In many instances, judges have ruled Trump lacked the authority to take the actions he did, and the administration has immediately appealed, according to Baptist News Global. Meanwhile, the chaos wrought by these policies has strained government systems and harmed people affected by them.
Democracy Forward, one of the chief sources of legal actions against the administration, has filed more than 150 lawsuits and taken more than 400 other legal actions to stop executive branch excesses. State attorneys general from multiple states have also sued the Trump administration legal losses legal challenges mount administration legal losses administration legal challenges.
