Democratic Senate candidate Graham Platner advanced from Maine’s primary on June 9, setting up a closely watched general election matchup against Republican incumbent Susan Collins in the 2026 Maine Senate race.
Platner, an oyster farmer and Marine Corps veteran, emerged from a competitive Democratic primary in which he faced outgoing Governor Janet Mills and other challengers. Mills had initially entered the race in October 2025 but suspended her campaign in April after Platner gained significant momentum.
In a UMass Lowell poll conducted May 13-26 and released June 4, Platner held a 48% to 43% lead over Collins in a general election matchup, with 6% undecided and 2% supporting another candidate. The poll surveyed 650 likely Maine voters and carried a margin of error of plus-or-minus 4.9 percentage points. John Cluverius, director of survey research for the Center for Public Opinion at UMass Lowell, noted that the Maine Senate race “is shaping up to be the most contentious in the country.” Cluverius also observed that while Platner slightly led in the poll, “he’s less well known than Collins, which makes voters more persuadable as new information comes out about him.”
Collins, who has served as Maine’s senior senator since 1997, is seeking her fifth full term. She is the only Republican senator currently representing a state that went for the Democratic presidential candidate in 2020—Maine voted for Joe Biden by 53.1%, while Collins won reelection that year with 51% of the vote. The UMass Lowell poll found that 53% of Maine respondents view Collins unfavorably, compared to 36% who view her favorably.
The general election is scheduled for November 3, 2026. Recent polling has shown the race tightening, with multiple surveys indicating a competitive contest in what political analysts view as a critical seat for Senate control. Platner’s path to the general election faced obstacles, as multiple controversies surrounding the candidate emerged in the weeks before the primary, though senior Democrats remained largely supportive of his candidacy.
