Jon Stewart criticized Donald Trump on Monday for abruptly ending an NBC “Meet the Press” interview, calling the president’s behavior “the hissy-fit of an incredibly fragile man-baby” after Trump walked out when challenged on his election fraud claims.
Trump ended the interview with host Kristen Welker on Sunday, June 8, after it aired on NBC News. The interview had been filmed in Chippewa Falls, Wisconsin, on Saturday before Trump was set to speak at a roundtable event with farmers.
During the tense exchange, Welker repeatedly questioned Trump’s baseless allegations that the 2020 presidential election and California’s gubernatorial primary were rigged. When Trump called the network “crooked” and Welker pushed back, Trump told her, “You’re a one-sided, crooked network. Sorry. Let’s call it quits because I’ve had enough.” He then removed his lapel microphone and walked off the set.
On his Monday episode of “The Daily Show,” Stewart opened by describing the interview as Trump’s “worst nightmare — a woman who won’t stop asking pertinent questions.” But his tone quickly shifted to criticism.
“Now, you could view this as the hissy-fit of an incredibly fragile man-baby, whose paper-thin skin can’t handle venturing out of the sycophantic embrace of his tongue-bathing acolytes. Or, actually, I don’t know how else you can view it. It really is just that. It is sad. It’s very sad.”

Stewart highlighted how Trump had repeatedly resorted to his election fraud claims throughout the interview, calling it his “fail-safe ‘in case of journalism break glass'” move. When Welker asked for evidence, Trump replied only that he had “to do was look,” offering no substantiation.
“He went to it, the fail-safe — in case of journalism, break glass. The EpiPen in case you’ve been stung by reality,” Stewart said, noting with sarcasm that “Trump’s fail-safe failed to safe.”
Stewart emphasized that Trump faced two options: reckon with the fact that his 2020 election fraud claims had never survived legal scrutiny despite six years and his own Justice Department’s resources, or “he could do his second option: smoke bomb.” Trump chose the latter, according to Stewart.
The comedian concluded by urging journalists to recognize the moment as permission to stop backing down from Trump. “Maybe, finally, this moment will give journalists permission not to back down, to not just leave it there and move on, and to finally be honest about Trump’s inability to be challenged in the moment,” Stewart said.
The interview covered several topics beyond elections, including the Iran war, the economy, potential interest rate hikes, and Trump’s proposed $1.8 billion “anti-weaponization fund.” But it was Trump’s repeated, unsubstantiated claims about rigged elections that ultimately prompted the walkout.
