Reports show multiple commercial vessels and oil tankers have been struck or attacked in and around the Strait of Hormuz, raising fresh concerns about security on a key global shipping route.
On Oct. 3, the UK Maritime Trade Operations agency reported two oil tankers were hit by “unidentified projectiles,” causing a small fire and blackout on one vessel that was later extinguished, according to an AFP report published by Macau Business.

Security monitors tracking the area say the incidents are part of a broader spike in attacks on merchant shipping in the waterways linking the Gulf to global markets. A maritime-security summary cited by Newswav and the Joint Maritime Information Center said at least 12 attacks, attempted attacks or harassment incidents on oil and gas tankers were recorded around the Strait of Hormuz between Sept. 28 and Oct. 5.
According to the AFP account, the first struck tanker was able to resume its voyage after the onboard fire was put out and there were no reported casualties or environmental damage in the two Oct. 3 incidents.

The JMIC data cited by Newswav indicates the week ending Oct. 5 saw the highest weekly total of tanker attacks since the start of the wider Iran war, with maritime sources describing drone overflights, projectiles and VHF harassment among the tactics recorded.
Analysts and shipping firms have warned such incidents add logistical risk and insurance costs for vessels transiting the strait, a chokepoint through which a large share of regional oil and LNG flows pass. The Macau Business report noted the passage remains at the heart of regional tensions, and that Tehran has at times blocked or fired on vessels it accused of unauthorized crossings.
For businesses and markets, the immediate effects are operational: ship operators alter routes or delay sailings, and insurers may raise premiums for voyages through the Persian Gulf approaches. The longer-term outlook depends on whether naval escorts, diplomatic steps or other measures reduce the frequency of incidents reported by maritime monitors.
