SMCI stock climbs 4% on margin beat, though guidance signals pullback ahead

Super Micro Computer’s stock climbed 4% on a gross margin beat in its fiscal Q4 2026 earnings, but forward guidance signals investors should expect a sharp pullback in profitability ahead. The server maker reported a non-GAAP gross margin of 17.6% for the quarter ended June 30, far exceeding its own guidance of 8.2% to 8.4%, and crushing analyst expectations with adjusted earnings per share of $1.70 versus a consensus forecast of $0.92.

The margin surprise, however, came with a clear caveat from management: it was not a sign of sustainable profitability. For the first quarter of fiscal 2027, Super Micro guided gross margin back down to 10.4% to 10.8%, a drop of roughly 700 basis points from the Q4 beat. That guidance is management’s own statement that the elevated margin is temporary, according to analysis from Trefis. The CFO attributed roughly 75% of the 750-basis-point sequential margin improvement in Q4 to a favorable shift in customer and product mix, including contracts that had been deferred out of the June quarter into later periods.

Revenue for the quarter reached $11.1 billion, up 93% year over year but falling slightly short of analyst expectations and landing near the low end of the company’s $11 billion to $12.5 billion guidance. The shortfall was driven by delays in customer readiness, particularly among large data center customers who pushed orders into future quarters. Those delays inadvertently reshaped the product mix: OEM appliance and large data center revenue, which typically carries lower margins on high-volume GPU work, fell 26% sequentially and dropped from 72% to 50% of total revenue. Enterprise and channel revenue, which carries higher margins, nearly doubled sequentially to fill the gap.

The rest of the margin beat came from lower tariff costs and a one-time inventory reserve benefit that the CFO described as nonrecurring. In the prior quarter, gross margin had stood at 10.1%, and the full fiscal 2026 year averaged 10.9%, closer to where management expects margins to settle once the deferred volume returns.

Despite the margin normalization ahead, Super Micro’s forward revenue outlook remained robust. The company guided fiscal 2027 revenue to $65 billion to $72 billion, well above analyst estimates near $54 billion, and projected first-quarter revenue of $14.5 billion to $15.5 billion. That bullish guidance came on the back of a record order backlog exceeding $60 billion booked in the June quarter alone, underscoring continued strength in AI infrastructure demand. The company expects to convert that backlog into shipments over the coming quarters, though management noted that customer-side constraints—power, cooling, and networking infrastructure—remain the primary bottleneck to fulfillment.

The margin beat and guidance pullback reflect a pattern common in server and semiconductor companies during periods of rapid demand shifts. When order timing changes the product mix, gross margins can spike temporarily, but only until volume normalizes. Investors who held through the recent volatility saw the stock surge on the earnings beat, but the forward guidance makes clear that the margin expansion was a one-quarter event tied to specific order deferrals, not the beginning of a sustained profitability recovery. The real test will come in the September quarter, when management has guided for both higher revenue and significantly lower margins, a combination that will require successful conversion of the massive backlog without further mix shifts to sustain investor confidence.
