Nvidia acquires Hugging Face for $13 billion in major AI push

Nvidia has agreed to acquire Hugging Face, the open-source artificial intelligence platform, for approximately $12.93 billion, marking the chipmaker’s largest outright purchase and a major bet on open-weight AI models as it expands beyond hardware into the developer ecosystem.

Under the deal announced September 3, Nvidia will pay about $11.9 billion to Hugging Face shareholders, with an additional equity-based retention program of up to $1 billion for employees, according to the company’s announcement and a filing with the Securities and Exchange Commission.

Hugging Face is one of the world’s largest repositories for open-source AI models and datasets. As of spring 2026, the platform hosted more than 2 million public models and over 500,000 datasets, serving a community of 13 million users, according to Hugging Face’s official blog.

The acquisition reflects Nvidia’s strategy to strengthen the open-source AI ecosystem and position itself as a central hub for developers building and deploying models. Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang said in a statement that open models strengthen safety and cybersecurity, accelerate innovation, and enable sovereignty across the AI industry. The company pledged that Hugging Face will remain an open platform accessible to the entire AI ecosystem, allowing developers to choose models freely.

The move positions Nvidia to compete with closed-source AI leaders like OpenAI and Anthropic by supporting open-weight alternatives. According to reporting from The Wall Street Journal, the deal ramps up Nvidia’s efforts to promote open-weight AI models that pose a competitive threat to proprietary systems. This strategy allows Nvidia to extend its influence across the AI development pipeline while maintaining the open-source ethos that has attracted millions of developers to the platform.

The acquisition comes as major technology companies intensify their competition for AI talent and infrastructure. In May 2025, OpenAI acquired io, the AI hardware startup founded by legendary designer Jony Ive, for $6.5 billion, demonstrating similar aggressive expansion into new AI-adjacent verticals. That deal was OpenAI’s largest acquisition at the time, but Nvidia’s Hugging Face purchase now exceeds it, signaling the escalating valuations and strategic importance of AI-related assets.

Earlier reports in late August had suggested Hugging Face was exploring a sale at a $13 billion valuation, confirming market expectations around the deal’s size before the formal announcement. Nvidia’s move also reflects broader industry trends: mega-deals valued above $5 billion accounted for more than 73% of deal value growth in 2025, according to consulting firm Bain, with AI-related acquisitions driving much of that activity.

The acquisition underscores Nvidia’s evolution from a pure chip manufacturer to a platform company seeking to shape the entire AI software and developer ecosystem. By controlling Hugging Face, Nvidia gains direct access to millions of developers, the ability to influence which models gain prominence, and a centralized platform to promote its own AI tools and infrastructure. Nvidia’s financial strength—demonstrated by its recent earnings beat and raised gross margin guidance—positions the company to fund such large acquisitions while continuing to invest in its core hardware business.
