Patria completes Finland’s first F135 engine assembly in Nokia


Patria has completed Finland’s first locally assembled F135 jet engine at its new Linnavuori facility in Nokia, marking a watershed moment for Finnish defense industrial participation in the global F-35 program. The milestone, announced on September 3, 2026, represents far more than the assembly of a single propulsion unit—it signals Finland’s transition from acquiring advanced fighters to building the domestic expertise required to sustain them over decades.

The F135, developed by Pratt & Whitney, is the engine powering all three F-35 variants and generates more than 40,000 pounds of thrust. Under an agreement signed in February 2026, Patria will assemble F135 engines at Linnavuori through 2030, with the facility subsequently shifting toward maintenance, repair, overhaul, and upgrade (MRO&U) services for Finland’s F-35 fleet throughout its operational lifetime. The assembly work is expected to directly employ approximately 50 people at Patria between 2025 and 2030.

The timing positions Finland strategically ahead of its first F-35A arrivals, which are scheduled for autumn 2026 at Lapland Air Wing in Rovaniemi. Rather than receiving aircraft first and building supporting expertise later, Finland is advancing aircraft introduction, infrastructure, industrial capability, and sustainment preparation in parallel. This sequencing reduces dependence on overseas support and strengthens the resilience of F-35 operations on NATO’s northern flank during prolonged or high-intensity missions.

Pratt & Whitney already operates an international F135 sustainment structure incorporating maintenance and repair capacity in the United States, Norway, the Netherlands, Japan, and Australia. Finland’s emerging propulsion capability adds another layer of geographic resilience in Northern Europe. The company explicitly identifies distributed sustainment as increasingly important in contested environments, and the Linnavuori facility will contribute to that wider network. Petri Hepola, Patria’s chief program officer for F-35, stated that “the completion of the first F135 engine is a significant milestone and a strong start for F135 engine assembly in Finland,” adding that it “demonstrates the successful cooperation between Patria, Pratt & Whitney, the Finnish Defence Forces and the Finnish Ministry of Defence, strengthening Finland’s security of supply and deepening Patria’s role in the global F-35 supply chain.” Finnish Air Force F-35 programme director Colonel (ret.) Henrik Elo emphasized that “the fact that our Joint Fighter fleet will be equipped with engines assembled in Finland is a clear demonstration of the close cooperation between the Finnish and US defence administrations and industries.”

For the United States and Pratt & Whitney, the development demonstrates how the F-35 program can deepen allied industrial integration while spreading sustainment capability across trusted partners. Pratt & Whitney Military Engines President Jill Albertelli directly linked Finland’s first assembled F135 to strengthening the global F-35 sustainment network, expanding propulsion capability in Finland, and reinforcing the collective defense of Finland and its NATO allies. Finland’s broader F-35 industrial participation extends beyond engine assembly.
