XRP surges 15% with $9 billion inflow as crypto gains momentum

XRP surged 15% on August 20 as the cryptocurrency recovered more than $9 billion in market capitalization in 24 hours, driven by macroeconomic tailwinds, a sharp short squeeze, and renewed political support for digital assets. The token’s market cap rose from roughly $63.08 billion on August 19 to $72.27 billion on August 20, according to data from Finbold, while XRP’s price jumped from $0.99 to $1.15—a psychologically important level not seen since July 21.

The rally came as the broader cryptocurrency market gained momentum following an announcement that the U.S. Treasury would double its long-term bond buybacks, pushing yields lower and improving the appeal of risk assets. Over $1.57 billion in crypto positions were liquidated in 24 hours, triggering a powerful short squeeze that propelled Bitcoin up 11.01% and lifted the total cryptocurrency market capitalization by just under 10 percent.

Political developments also fueled the momentum. On August 19, President Donald Trump called for Congress to pass the CLARITY Act at a White House event attended by major crypto executives. “Now we need Congress to take the next step by passing the CLARITY Act, fair version of the CLARITY Act,” Trump said, signaling continued executive support for the legislation widely viewed as crucial for the industry’s regulatory framework.

The move marked a significant reversal for XRP, which had struggled throughout much of August. The token had dropped 65% from its January 2026 high of $3.40 and had tested the $1.00 level earlier in the month as ETF inflows collapsed. In early August, XRP ETF inflows had fallen 93% to just $1.01 million weekly, according to Phemex, leaving the token vulnerable to further downside pressure.

Broader crypto strength supported XRP’s advance. Spot Bitcoin ETFs recorded roughly $517 million in net inflows on August 20, according to SoSoValue data cited by Finbold, as traders rotated into risk assets on the back of lower bond yields and the short squeeze. XRP derivatives traders remained overwhelmingly bullish, with longs accounting for 73.34% of positions over the prior 24 hours against 26.58% in shorts, suggesting strong conviction among leveraged traders—though the heavily skewed positioning also left the token vulnerable to a reversal if momentum faded.

Technical analysts noted key levels to watch. A decisive close above $1.13 could strengthen the setup and put $1.17 and $1.22 Fibonacci extension levels in focus, according to Finbold. However, a break below $1.08 would suggest momentum was beginning to fade.

The rally underscored XRP’s sensitivity to both macro conditions and regulatory sentiment. Spot XRP ETFs have accumulated $1.48 billion in cumulative net inflows since launching in November 2025, making them a barometer for institutional interest in the token. The August 20 surge reflected the largest single-day inflow of the year, driven by a confluence of factors that temporarily overwhelmed the headwinds that had plagued the token throughout the summer.
