Hannaford Supermarkets is recalling six deli and produce items after detecting potential salmonella contamination linked to jalapeños supplied by Coast Citrus Distributors, the company announced last Saturday.
The recalled items include four burritos and wraps (Beans Rice and Cheese Burrito, Classic Beef Burrito, Chicken Verde Burrito, and Chipotle Chicken Tortilla Wrap), plus Diced Jalapeños and Pico de Gallo Salsa. All affected products have been removed from Hannaford store shelves across Maine, New Hampshire, Vermont, Massachusetts, and New York.
The recall stems from a broader voluntary recall by jalapeño supplier Coast Citrus Distributors, which distributes peppers from a grower in Sinaloa, Mexico. According to the CDC, the underlying outbreak has sickened 345 people across 27 states, with 36 hospitalizations and no deaths reported. Illnesses began on dates ranging from June 19 through July 20, 2026.
Hannaford said it issued the recall “in an abundance of caution” after being alerted to the supplier issue. Notably, no salmonella infections have been reported in the five states where Hannaford operates, according to the company.
Salmonella can contaminate produce through contaminated irrigation water, contact with animal feces, or handling by infected workers during growth and processing, according to food safety experts. When contaminated peppers are incorporated into prepared deli items like burritos and salsas, the bacteria can spread to finished products.
Customers who purchased any of the recalled items should not eat them and may return the products to their local Hannaford store for a full refund.
