U.S. Representative John James won Michigan’s Republican gubernatorial primary on Tuesday, defeating businessman Perry Johnson and other rivals to secure his party’s nomination for the November general election. James, a Trump-endorsed congressman from Shelby Township representing Michigan’s 10th Congressional District, will face Democrat Jocelyn Benson, the state’s secretary of state, in what is expected to be a competitive race.
James defeated Johnson, who spent nearly $30 million of his own money on the campaign, by a decisive margin. According to Inside Elections, James won with 50 percent of the vote to Johnson’s 35 percent, emerging from a crowded field that included former Michigan Attorney General Mike Cox.
Trump’s endorsement of James proved significant in the primary contest. The former president announced his support for James in June, calling him his pick for Michigan’s top executive office. James has aligned himself with Trump’s America First agenda throughout his political career.
James’ path to the gubernatorial race reflects a pattern of political persistence. He ran unsuccessfully for U.S. Senate in both 2018 and 2020 before narrowly winning his House seat in 2022 by fewer than 2,000 votes over Democrat Carl Marlinga. He was reelected to Congress in 2024, again by a slim 1,600-vote margin. His gubernatorial bid represents his most significant electoral undertaking since those earlier Senate campaigns.
Benson, who won the Democratic primary with commanding support, has led in polling against James in the general election matchup. A recent poll showed Benson ahead 47 percent to 38 percent, signaling the challenge James faces in a state that has become a perennial battleground. Trump won Michigan in 2016 and 2024, but Joe Biden defeated him there in 2020.
The November general election will determine Michigan’s next governor as Democrat Gretchen Whitmer’s second term concludes. The race is expected to draw significant national attention and resources, with both parties viewing Michigan as essential to their broader electoral strategies.
