Bill Maher accuses Fauci of lying about COVID origins on Real Time

Bill Maher criticized Dr. Anthony Fauci on HBO’s “Real Time” on August 1, accusing him of telling “actual lies” about COVID-19 origins, days after Fauci invoked the Fifth Amendment 111 times at a Senate hearing.

During the episode, Maher argued that Fauci had misled the public about the lab leak theory, calling out what he described as the unfair dismissal of the hypothesis as “racist.” The comedian said the big issue was the origin of COVID, which he framed as “very important,” and criticized the way the lab leak theory had been treated in mainstream discourse.

Fauci’s Senate hearing on July 29, 2026, before the Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee, chaired by Senator Rand Paul, became the backdrop for Maher’s criticism. When pressed on questions about gain-of-function research and COVID origins, Fauci declined to answer by invoking his Fifth Amendment right against self-incrimination repeatedly throughout the hearing.

Maher also took aim at gain-of-function research itself, saying the government “shouldn’t do” such work. The comedian’s comments reflected a broader reconsideration of how the lab leak theory had been treated in the early pandemic years.

The lab leak theory was widely dismissed in 2020 and 2021 as a conspiracy theory or misinformation. Some mainstream media outlets and scientists, including a New York Times science reporter, described it as having “racist roots” or being tied to xenophobic narratives, particularly after former President Donald Trump’s use of terms like “China virus.” Over time, the hypothesis gained credibility among scientists and officials, with investigations opening into the possibility that the virus escaped from the Wuhan Institute of Virology due to safety failures.

Fauci has long faced criticism from Republican lawmakers over his role in the pandemic response and questions about whether his agency funded gain-of-function research at the Wuhan lab. The July hearing marked an escalation, with Fauci citing Senator Paul’s “unhinged obsession” with him as the reason he would not answer questions, according to his opening statement.
