Salesforce stock surges on $1.6B federal AI contract and agentic search boom

Salesforce stock surged 7% on Monday as investors rewarded the company for securing a $1.6 billion federal contract with the Department of Veterans Affairs and mounting momentum in agentic AI adoption, which is reshaping how shoppers discover products online.

The VA awarded Salesforce a three-year agreement with a total contract ceiling of $1.6 billion to modernize veteran care and services through the company’s AI agent platform, Agentforce. The contract, announced July 24, will deploy Salesforce’s AI agents for 24/7 contact center support, patient triage, and care coordination across the agency serving 17 million veterans.

The federal win arrives as Salesforce’s broader agentic AI strategy gains commercial traction. On July 28, Salesforce reported that agentic search—where shoppers begin purchase journeys by asking AI assistants questions instead of using traditional search bars—grew 200% year-over-year, according to its State of Commerce report. Traffic referred from AI chats increased between 150% and 428% year-over-year across every quarter measured, while overall e-commerce traffic grew in the single to low double digits.

Agentforce, Salesforce’s AI agent platform, has become the company’s fastest-growing product. In the first quarter of fiscal 2027 (ended April 30, 2026), Agentforce annual recurring revenue reached $1.2 billion, up 205% year-over-year, marking the first time the metric surpassed $1 billion.

The VA contract signals broader federal appetite for agentic AI solutions. Salesforce’s Agentforce deployment will reduce appointment scheduling from 28 days to minutes across the VA’s operations, addressing a longstanding pain point in veteran services. The deal also reflects government agencies’ growing reliance on autonomous AI agents to modernize legacy systems and improve service delivery at scale.

Salesforce’s momentum comes despite broader headwinds in the CRM stock market. Earlier in 2026, the company’s stock had declined significantly amid concerns about Agentforce adoption rates and execution challenges. However, the combination of a major government contract win and evidence of accelerating agentic search adoption has renewed investor confidence in the company’s AI-first strategy.

Commerce leaders are taking notice. Salesforce’s research found that 86% of commerce leaders say AI is raising customer expectations, while 44% of non-adopters plan to deploy agentic AI within the next six months. Among organizations already using agentic AI, 35% (the largest share) are prioritizing scaling across functions and teams, suggesting the experimental phase is giving way to enterprise-wide deployment.
