Rep. Cory Mills, a Republican congressman representing Florida’s 7th District, is under criminal investigation by the U.S. Department of Justice focused on his finances, according to multiple sources familiar with the matter. The investigation is being run out of the Middle District of Florida, with investigators reportedly interested in some of Mills’ alleged overseas business dealings.
Mills’ office did not respond to ABC News’ request for comment about the DOJ probe. The investigation marks the latest legal challenge facing the first-term congressman, who has been a polarizing figure since his election to Congress in 2023.
Existing Ethics Investigation and Prior Legal Issues
The DOJ investigation comes as Mills is already the subject of a House Ethics Committee probe announced in November 2025. That investigation examines allegations that Mills violated campaign finance laws, misused congressional resources, and engaged in sexual misconduct or dating violence, according to the House Committee on Ethics.
According to a May 2026 statement from the House Ethics Committee, the Investigative Subcommittee has authorized more than 20 subpoenas, collected thousands of documents, and contacted dozens of witnesses. The committee is reviewing allegations that Mills may have violated various laws and standards of conduct, including a February 2025 incident in which the Washington D.C. Metropolitan Police Department responded to a report that Mills had assaulted a woman with whom he was in a relationship. Although the MPD determined not to charge Mills for assault, the committee emphasized that a decision not to bring charges is not a finding of innocence.
In October 2025, a Florida judge issued an injunction limiting Mills’ engagement on social media and other forms of contact with his ex-girlfriend, preventing him from going within 500 feet of her residence or workplace. Mills’ ex-girlfriend had claimed that he threatened to release nude images of her and to physically harm her future boyfriends after their breakup. Mills has denied all allegations against him.
Campaign and Electoral Context
Mills is currently running for re-election in Florida’s 7th Congressional District in the August 2026 primary. He faces three other Republican candidates and has already won the first round of a legal fight to remain on the primary ballot. A primary opponent had sued to remove Mills from the ballot, arguing that he improperly notarized his candidate documents while in Washington, D.C., when Florida law requires notaries to be physically present in the state. A judge dismissed the complaint “with prejudice,” meaning the case is permanently closed, allowing Mills to remain in the race.
