U.S. Sen. John Fetterman criticized President Donald Trump’s repeated claims about 2020 election fraud, calling them a “distraction” from pressing national issues during an appearance on CNN’s “State of the Union” on July 19, 2026.
Fetterman’s rebuke came after Trump delivered a primetime address to the nation on July 16, in which he accused China of interfering in the 2018 midterm elections and the 2020 presidential election, claiming the country had compromised voter data and stolen 220 million voter files from states across the U.S.
“I don’t know why the president is dragging up all of this stuff,” Fetterman said on the CNN program. “You’re the president. Do something positive, and you are talking about 2020. That’s been settled over six years ago. It’s deeply unhelpful, and that distracts important things, especially like the Iranian war right now.”
The Pennsylvania Democrat emphasized that the 2020 election in his state was secure. “That was the voice of Pennsylvania, and they picked Joe Biden in 2020,” Fetterman said. “That’s a fact. That was absolutely secure, fair and accurate.” Fetterman, who served as Pennsylvania’s lieutenant governor during the 2020 election, pointed out that the vast majority of the state’s 67 counties are deep red and have never encountered any kinds of fraud.
Trump’s allegations about China and the 2020 election echoed claims he has made repeatedly since losing the 2020 presidential election to Joe Biden. The Department of Justice found no evidence of widespread voter fraud in 2020, according to reporting on the primetime address.
