Former Vice President Kamala Harris leads the 2028 Democratic presidential field in a new national poll, commanding 35.3 percent support among likely voters and establishing an early advantage over a still-forming primary field.
A Quantus Insights survey conducted July 3, 6, and 7 found Harris holding a 17.6 percentage-point lead over California Governor Gavin Newsom, her nearest rival at 17.7 percent, according to Newsweek. Former Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg followed with 12.9 percent support, while Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez received 11.1 percent and Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro trailed at 7.1 percent. The poll of 1,140 respondents carried a margin of error of plus or minus 2.9 percentage points.
Harris’s lead reflects a pattern visible across multiple 2026 surveys. A Center Square Voters’ Voice poll conducted June 1-4 showed Harris at 27 percent compared with Newsom’s 14 percent among 1,013 Democrats. A Lake Research Partners survey of 800 Democratic primary voters conducted May 6-11 placed Harris at 26 percent in the first round, ahead of Newsom at 17 percent, with Harris winning a ranked-choice simulation 52 percent to 48 percent.
Early presidential polling often reflects name recognition and residual political capital rather than settled voter preferences. However, consistent leads can shape perceptions of viability within parties and influence donor behavior. Harris’s consolidation of more than one-third of support in a multicandidate race—while her nearest competitor remains below 20 percent—mirrors patterns historically associated with front-runner status in primary contests.
Harris said in April 2026 that she is “thinking about” a 2028 presidential bid, according to CNN and ABC News. She has not formally announced a campaign. No major candidate from either party has entered the 2028 race, which is scheduled for November 7, 2028.
