President Donald Trump attended a dignified transfer of four U.S. service members at Dover Air Force Base on July 22, honoring soldiers killed in the ongoing war in Iran. The ceremony marked Trump’s second attendance at such a solemn ritual this year, as the conflict has claimed at least 18 American lives over nearly five months.
The four fallen soldiers were 1st Lt. Tyler James Feehan, 25, of Ewa Beach, Hawaii; Pvt. Isabella Gonzales, 19, of Carrollton, Texas; Sgt. Angel S. Rampersad, 28, of Ozone Park, New York; and Sgt. Michael Emmanuel Swinton, 30, of Fayetteville, North Carolina. Three were killed during an Iranian attack on Muwaffaq Salti Air Base in Jordan, while Swinton died during a controlled detonation of a downed Iranian drone in Iraq.
“They’re indeed great heroes,” Trump told reporters before the transfer. “All of them said, very strongly, that we can’t let Iran have a nuclear weapon, so we’re going to honor them.” Trump met privately with the families of the deceased before the ceremony, describing the encounter as one of the hardest duties of the presidency.
A dignified transfer is a solemn military procedure in which the remains of fallen service members are transferred from an aircraft to a waiting vehicle at Dover Air Force Base in Delaware. The ritual honors those who have given their lives in service to the country. During the ceremony, Trump and Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth saluted as military personnel carried the flag-draped transfer cases from the aircraft.
The deaths come as the United States has intensified military operations against Iran. The Pentagon reported that airstrikes have been conducted for 11 consecutive days, with no clear end in sight to a conflict Trump promised months ago would conclude quickly. Beyond the four soldiers honored at the transfer, the Department of Defense has reported that more than 100 U.S. soldiers have been injured in the Iran war since July 7, with the vast majority sustaining minor concussions.
After the ceremony concluded, Trump offered Feehan’s family a ride home on Air Force One to Georgia, where they are from. Sen. Thom Tillis of North Carolina, Sen. Chris Coons of Delaware, and several White House officials also attended the transfer.
