Nancy Mace introduces bill to ban immigration from Somalia, Sudan, South Sudan

Rep. Nancy Mace (R-SC) announced plans on June 25, 2026, to introduce legislation that would ban immigration from Somalia, Sudan, and South Sudan, citing security concerns and assimilation issues in these nations.

The bill, known as the Somalia Immigration Moratorium Act (H.R. 7359), is co-sponsored by Rep. Brandon Gill (R-TX). In her press release, Mace stated: “We will not put the interests of foreign nationals ahead of the safety and security of American citizens. No more importing instability. No more ignoring the warning signs. No more apologizing for putting our country first. America First. Always.”

Mace described Somalia, Sudan, and South Sudan as “among the most dangerous and unstable nations on earth,” arguing the legislation is necessary to protect American communities. The congresswoman claimed that people from these countries “do not assimilate to our American values, culture or constitution.”

The proposal aligns with the Trump administration’s existing immigration restrictions. In June 2025, the Trump administration suspended entry for nationals of Sudan as immigrants and nonimmigrants, according to White House statements. By December 2025, the administration had expanded travel bans to include Somalia and South Sudan, along with multiple other countries, citing national security concerns.

Mace has made immigration a central focus of her legislative agenda. Earlier in 2026, she introduced the No Immigration Without Assimilation Act (H.R. 9030) in May, which would require mandatory assimilation screenings before any immigration benefit is approved. In January 2025, the House passed her Preventing Violence Against Women by Illegal Aliens Act by a 274-145 vote, with bipartisan support.
