Georgia Furniture Mart closes after 40 years, liquidation sales begin Thursday

Georgia Furniture Mart is closing permanently after 40 years of serving the Atlanta metropolitan area, with liquidation sales beginning Thursday at its Norcross and Kennesaw locations. The closure marks the end of a furniture retail era that began in 1986 under the name Underpriced Furniture before rebranding as Georgia Furniture Mart in 2020.

Owners Michael Hall and Tim Padden announced the decision citing an evolving retail landscape and the sale of the company’s real estate properties. Hall founded the business in 1986 with a simple mission: offer high-quality home furnishings at competitive prices. In 2020, the company rebranded and opened a distribution center in Tucker to enable next-day delivery services.

The flagship showroom in Norcross spans 92,000 square feet with an attached 20,000-square-foot outlet store. The company expanded further in 2024 by opening a second showroom in Kennesaw. During the liquidation, the stores will offer deep discounts on complete living room, dining room, and bedroom sets, along with major brands like Sealy, Tempur-Pedic, and Stearns & Foster.

“We are deeply thankful to everyone who has been part of this journey and entrusted us with their homes,” Hall said in a statement. “While this chapter is coming to a close, the memories and relationships we’ve built will always remain.”

Georgia Furniture Mart’s closure is part of a broader wave of retail challenges facing the furniture industry in 2026. The sector faces a poor housing market, elevated interest rates, low consumer confidence, and tariff pressures. According to industry analysis, retailers in the home sector face cost pressure, tariffs, sustainability regulations, and uneven demand as macro headwinds persist.

Shoppers can visit the final liquidation sales starting Thursday at 6694 Dawson Boulevard in Norcross and 860 Cobb Place Boulevard Northwest, Suite 106 in Kennesaw. Over the last four decades, the business has supported local veterans organizations, youth programs, and St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.
