Big Boy No. 4014 stops in Leetsdale tonight on coast-to-coast tour

Union Pacific’s Big Boy No. 4014, the world’s largest operating steam locomotive, arrives in Leetsdale tonight at 6:15 p.m. EDT for a 30-minute whistle stop as part of its historic first-ever coast-to-coast tour celebrating America’s 250th anniversary.

The locomotive will depart Leetsdale at 6:45 p.m. EDT from 1st Street and Avenue A near Ferry Street, offering residents and visitors a rare chance to see the massive machine in person. The stop marks one of more than 50 whistle-stops across 10 states on the eastern leg of the journey.

Big Boy No. 4014 is the only one of eight remaining Big Boy locomotives still in operation, according to Union Pacific. Built in 1941, the locomotive weighs approximately 1.2 million pounds and measures 133 feet long, making it one of the most powerful steam engines ever constructed.

The Leetsdale stop holds particular significance as part of a broader milestone: this is the first time Big Boy has traveled to the East Coast since its construction more than eight decades ago. The locomotive was restored to operating condition in 2019 after sitting dormant for nearly six decades, and this 2026 tour represents the first time it has steamed across the Mississippi River eastward.

The eastern leg of the coast-to-coast tour, conducted in partnership with Norfolk Southern, includes major display events in eight cities and whistle-stops in states including Pennsylvania, Ohio, Indiana, and New York—many of which are seeing Big Boy for the first time. The tour began in Sacramento, California, on April 10, 2026, and will conclude later this summer after passing through the Midwest and Great Plains.

Leetsdale is preparing for thousands of visitors, according to local officials. The borough has advised attendees to arrive early due to expected crowds and has provided parking information for those planning to witness the locomotive’s brief stop tonight.
