Fidji Simo leads OpenAI’s push to make ChatGPT a profitable consumer product

Fidji Simo, OpenAI’s CEO of Applications, has been central to transforming ChatGPT from a research achievement into a consumer and enterprise product designed to generate revenue at scale.

Simo joined OpenAI in August 2025 after serving on the company’s board for over a year. She arrived with a proven track record: as CEO of Instacart from August 2021 through May 2025, she grew the grocery delivery platform’s advertising business to nearly $1 billion in annual revenue by 2024, according to Forbes.

Her mandate at OpenAI is ambitious. The company has set a revenue target of $280 billion by 2030, split roughly equally between consumer and enterprise segments, according to Growth.Talent and multiple sources including CNBC and The Information. This represents a dramatic escalation from OpenAI’s reported $13.1 billion in revenue in 2025.

Simo has overseen the launch of several high-profile consumer initiatives. In September 2025, OpenAI introduced ChatGPT Pulse, a newsletter product that generates personalized, AI-written briefings while users sleep, according to OpenAI’s official announcement and TechCrunch. In January 2026, the company launched ChatGPT Health, a service connecting users’ medical records with AI assistance, according to Wikipedia. Most notably, OpenAI began testing advertisements in ChatGPT’s free and Go tiers in February 2026, a shift that Simo championed after conducting roundtable discussions with nearly 100 OpenAI employees about guardrails and principles for AI advertising, according to Business Insider.

The push toward profitability comes as OpenAI faces mounting costs. The company is projected to lose approximately $14 billion in 2026 and accumulate $111 billion in cash burn through 2030, according to Forbes and The Information. Competitors including Anthropic and Google have begun eroding OpenAI’s early lead, with Anthropic’s coding tool outperforming OpenAI’s despite coding being a top internal priority, Business Insider reported.

Simo’s approach to scaling the company emphasizes speed and clarity. She publishes monthly updates detailing obstacles removed—from small annoyances like headphone procurement to larger structural bottlenecks in code review processes—and maintains a dedicated employee inbox for flagging issues, according to Business Insider. Former colleagues describe her as intense and detail-oriented, with one noting she will “read every single document—including the links.”

At Instacart, Simo’s monetization strategy proved effective. The company’s advertising revenue totaled approximately $740 million in 2022, representing nearly 30 percent of total revenue, according to The Information. She brought similar expertise to OpenAI at a critical moment: the company needed to transition from a research organization to a product-driven business capable of sustaining multi-billion-dollar compute costs.

In April 2026, Simo announced she was taking medical leave to address a worsening neuroimmune condition, according to CNBC and The Wall Street Journal. The medical leave marked a significant shift in her role, though her strategic initiatives and product roadmap remain central to OpenAI’s near-term plans ahead of a potential 2026 IPO.
