Kosovo Minister: a new wind in KEK

Prishtina, 08 August 2006 - Kosovar media have published a letter to the public of Kosovo Minister of Energy and Mining, Mr. Ethem Ceku, regarding the power supply in Kosovo and the Kosovo Energetic Corporation (KEK).

“During the last few months, we have managed to establish a partnership to overcome the difficult situation in the energy sector of Kosovo. We offered each other a good opportunity to improve the situation and we have promised each other that we will be able to do it. Despite the many difficulties the energy sector is currently facing, we are witnessing a new breeze in KEK, followed by positive developments.”

“Only during the month of July, in comparison with the same period of last year, we have managed to increase cash collection for two million euros as a result of the joint engagement of KEK workers and consumers who positively responded to the appeal to pay the electricity used.”

“The recent measures undertaken during the last months have resulted in a positive trend of cash collection, including the MoU signed between the MEM, KEK and the Ministry of Internal Affairs (MIA), disconnecting the illegal consumers and the changes in KEK’s management structure, all of which have added to the responsibility of all of KEK’s operational levels.”

“In the middle term or long term, through the Ministry of Energy and Mining, the Kosovo Government is working to ensure a sound future of energy supply. The new Power Plant Kosovo C will be a modern one that fulfils all European standards for preserving the environment. The influence of this great project will be felt among your families and you, the citizens of Kosovo, will be direct participants of all the benefits the power plant will bring. The project that is going to be the greatest of its kind in the region will turn Kosovo from the importer of expensive electricity into an exporter of electricity for the entire region. It will turn Kosovo into a factor of security and stability in South-Eastern Europe and even further.”

“I herewith appeal to the Kosovo citizens to be more rational with using the electricity and regular in paying the electricity bills. This is the only way for us to prove that we are a self-sustainable society that is capable of going forward. The stability and independence of our country is something that is created each day. Each and every one of us is a part of this process.”
