Kosovo: Why is KTA saving Trepca and Brezovica?

Prishtinë, August 1, 2007 - The Kosovar daily Lajm carried an article on enterprises in minority areas that were not privatized even after the 28th wave of privatization.

The KTA will proceed with the privatization of the enterprises in Serbian areas, whereas, according to the daily, KTA officials stressed that the blockage of the privatization has a political background. The KTA Public Relations office stressed that some of the enterprises were tendered, but there was a small number of bidders therefore the KTA could not be assured whether the offers were fair market prices.

Minister of Trade and Industry, Bujar Dugolli, said to the daily that the privatisation in minority areas failed because of the lack of interest of potential investors. Last year the tourist complex ‘Narcis’ in Brezovica was announced for privatisation but after the objection from the Serbian community the announcement was annulled. After all, the complex is still managed by Serbs and is one of the greatest debtors to KEK. The KTA Board members stressed that the complex will soon be privatised right after a response from the Legal Office in New York.

The issue nobody can say anything about is the Trepca complex, a part of which is in Zvecan and Leposavic/Albanik. Dugolli admits that the complex is not yet planned to be privatized. “The complex is being analyzed and we still do not know what method we should use for the privatization of Trepca,” said Dugolli.
